We Wear The Mask

Masks have been a focal point of our conversation throughout the pandemic seasons, but, in truth, as Paul Laurence Dunbar notes in We Wear the Mask, masks have always been a part of human life and have long played a pivotal role in human history. What masks do you wear? What masks do you fear or celebrate? Who are you when the mask comes off? Do you even know? Write in response to those questions or lift a line or image from Dunbar. I am particularly struck by these lines:

We wear the mask that grins and lies,

It hides our cheeks and shades our eyes,—
