Seeds

There is much to love about fall. Here in Kentucky one of the things I love is a break from the relentless heat of summer and the ability to take a walk in the middle of the day without sweating. Another thing I love is that my drive to work brings with it the beautiful colors of the Daniel Boone National Forest. I love that view even in the rain but on a sunny day it just brings me so much joy. There have been days when I walk around trying to capture photos of that beauty but it is impossible to get just the right angle from the sidewalks of Morehead State University. I love the shawls that the hills so often wear at this time of year – especially during my morning drive.
However, even if I do not visit my ancestral roots in the fall, my mind will always return to apples in the fall. I am a child of the apple orchard and will always prize its delicious fruit. Raspberry might be the taste of family, but apple will always be the taste of home for me. So, of course, when there is a Slowdown episode titled “Like Apple from Seed by Molly Johnsen” I am going to listen.
However, this poem and Maggie Smith’s intro really aren’t about apples, but about seeds and stories. I am captivated by this idea of potential and support and connection. I know many people associate fall with endings and harvesting, but, as a teacher of first year college writers, fall always feels like a season of planting seeds. And, as a person preparing for transition, this season feels even more momentous.
What stories and associations do you love about fall?
