Advent of Joy

Advent Calendars are my love language. Traditionally my son gets a Lego calendar and my mother a jigsaw puzzle while my husband and my son’s girlfriend get something more eclectic (hot sauce and charm bracelet this year), but for six years my gift to myself (and my fellow writers and poetry people) has been a collection of poems organized around a theme. This is the third year that I have drawn my inspiration from the advent wreath because those traditional themes are so important to us as humans and offer a wealth of poetic inspiration and exploration. In these fraught and turbulent times, we can all use more joy in our lives and too often it is easy to overlook those fleeting glimmers of joy that help us through sorrow and struggle. I hope that my 2025 poetic advent calendar, the Advent of Joy, will bring you both comfort and inspiration this advent.

I write in response to these poems each day and hope those journal entries will inspire some poetry, but my friends can choose to experience this calendar any way they wish – as a reader or a writer or both. If you wish to join a community of writers also enjoying this journey check out the Rebel Cartographers on Thursday evenings. We will be enjoying these poems over our next four meetings: 12/4 (1-4); 12/11 (5-11); 12/18 (12-18); and 1/1 (19-25).

Please enjoy my Advent of Joy poetic inspirations this season and just write!
