What do you believe? What have you witnessed? What forces are at work in your life?
How could America be a more perfect union if more Americans lived up to one specific personal value? If you were going to write your American Creed what would it be?
This fall my first year college writers have once again embarked on a “What If” exploration of our personal values as part of the Morehead Writing Project‘s Building A More Perfect Union grant, Root Deep, Grow Tall. The Just Write Virtual Writing Group joined my first year writing students in an exploration of these questions by exploring two poems this week:
- Credo by Andrew Zawacki
- The Answer by Carl Sandburg
I love both these poems for the way they ask us in vary different ways to consider what we believe, what we have witnessed, and what forces are at work in our lives. So many delicious metaphors and images at play in these poems to inspire your writing. And who could not benefit from exploring your own creed from time to time?
