West Virginia

The second stop of Write Across America‘s first ever school year marathon was in West Virginia where writers explored four different themes prevalent in West Virginia history, identity, culture, and life: nature and environment, work and community, outmigration, and rebellion.

The rich layers of West Virginia voices and texts and music and images provided infinite variations of writing inspiration and each of the four themes also included writing prompts:

  • Land is used, appreciated, and exploited throughout our country and world.
  • Community is shaped by nuanced shared experiences, but too often we fall into stereotypes that obscure reality.
  • How does migration shape our lives and communities?
  • Are we, as humans, able to learn lessons from others?
