California Dreaming

What is worth preserving? What makes something valuable? Can you write directions to those places and things whether they exist today or only in your memory?

This week the Just Write Virtual Writing Group enjoyed the sixth stop on its 7-week journey with the National Writing Project’s Write Across America virtual writing marathon (you can sign up here). Each week we will revisit the invitation offered by the host site and the writing generated at the Tuesday event to find new inspiration and/or extend writing begun earlier in the week.

The Aug. 2 stop was hosted by the South Coast Writing Project and took us to Southern California where stop organizers subverted our expectations and challenged us to consider what locations move us to write and reflect because they aren’t what they seem? Inspired by Wishes, Lies, and Dreams by Kenneth Koch, they asked us to look around in our physical, personal or internal space and consider:

  • What isn’t what it seems to be and why?
  • What seems to be but really is?

The South Coast Writing Project’s Story Map offers rich opportunity to write about the inspiring locations and writing invitations. I have written a half dozen journal entries already and there is still more to explore.
