Exploring Our Humanity

What does being human mean to you? What do you hope being human means to others?

During the second week of the writing marathon intended to inspire both with my first year writing students and the Just Write virtual writing group, we focused on our humanity. Just as we did in our first session, Writing Our Way Into The Journey, we opened with a grounding prompt: I am a writer from…

Being Human

Our exploration of our humanity opened with the trailer of the trailer for Human the movie (learn more about the project here). I posed several questions:

  • What defines and shapes our humanity?
  • What responsibilities weigh on us as humans?
  • What do you see or seek in other humans?
  • What kind of human do you want to be?

I then shared two poems by Rumi: Unfold Your Own Myth and The Guest House.

In Community

Of course no one is human alone. Our creeds and our values are shaped by the communities where we are born and live. I invite you to consider how your family and community history have informed your creed and values. Perhaps you would rather write about what those values look like in action in your life, in your family, or in your community.
