Four Corners Monument

Write Across America traveled to the Four Corners Monument for our April 2025 stop so we could add Colorado and Utah to our list of new states to the Write Across America map as well as return to Arizona and New Mexico. This invitation to write is also available as a slideshow. This session, hosted by the South Coast Writing Project, explored intersections and crossroads both physical and metaphorical which offered many writing inspirations.

We began this Stop by exploring the crossroads in our lives:

Write about a time in your life journey when you felt at a similar intersection of multiple paths, influences, or possibilities. How did you navigate this crossroads? What did you learn from each direction?

After exploring the Four Corners story map, we chose to write in response to that inspiration or:

Consider the metaphorical “roads” that have led you to important moments in your life’s journey. What did you observe along one of these paths? What unexpected sights, challenges, or revelations appeared along the way?

While the story map offered rich inspiration, I personally found much to write about in response to these invitations:

At Four Corners, one can physically be in four states simultaneously. Write about how we occupy multiple roles and spaces at once in our lives. How do we find balance?

Choose one of the states that leads to the Four Corners. What unexpected lessons might be found on this particular journey? How do the landscape’s unique features (desert, mountain, mesa, canyon) reflect aspects of your life path?

Four Corners Monument represents a human-designated point of convergence. Write about a planned or unplanned convergence in your life journey that created a significant moment of learning or insight.

We do not yet know where Write Across America will go this summer (which will be our sixth) but if you are interested in finding out you can sign up for Write Across America community here. Visit our map to check out all the stops on our five year (and counting) tour of America.
