Where can a song take you? What is the soundtrack of your youth? What is the soundtrack of the important days of your life? What role has music played in your life?
This week the Just Write Virtual Writing Group began its 7-week journey with the National Writing Project’s Write Across America virtual writing marathon (you can sign up here). Each week we will revisit the invitation offered by the host site and the writing generated at the Tuesday event to find new inspiration and/or extend writing begun earlier in the week.
The June 28 stop was hosted by the Chippewa River Writing Project and offered the theme of Making Noise with Michigan Musicians in a delightful mashup of place-inspired writing and summer road trip tunes — even if your travel is just down memory lane.
The hosts carefully curated 10 Michigan musicians and one specific song to inspire our writing:
- Supremes: Where Did Our Love Go (1964)
- Aretha Franklin: Respect (1967)
- White Stripes: Seven Nation Army (2003)
- Eminem: Lose Yourself (2002)
- Stevie Wonder: I Just Called to Say I Love You (1984)
- Alice Cooper: School’s Out (1972)
- Parliament Funkadelic: Give Up the Funk (Tear the Roof off the Sucker) (1975)
- Bob Seger: Turn the Page (1973)
- Greta Van Fleet: Highway Tune (2017)
- Madonna: Material Girl (1984)

We were also invited to make our own mini mixtape and write about that journey. Whether we were writing in response to a particular artist, song, or era of music – or we chose to write in response to selected lyrics or tracks – this writing invitation offers a lot of musical inspiration for your personal journey.
