What Can Games Teach Us?

As my students start thinking about rhetorical analysis, I challenged them to think and write about the question of what games can teach us. We discussed some of the moral, ethical, and big philosophical questions that games invite us to consider. We explored the role of games in our human story from who plays specific games as well as when and why certain games were invented. Then I shared We Should Make a Documentary About Spades by Terrance Hayes as an additional entry to this exploration.

When you think about one specific game that has played an important role in your life what comes to mind when you think about these questions:

  • What big questions about life does this game help you explore?
  • How does this game challenge you to consider your humanity?
  • What role does this game play in history (your family or community – or our nation?
