Writing Home

How does your home, your heritage, and your community shape you into the person you are or the person you want to be?

This fall my first year college writers are once again embarking on a “What If” exploration of our personal values. This semester our work will be part of the Morehead Writing Project‘s Building A More Perfect Union grant, Root Deep, Grow Tall. The Just Write Virtual Writing Group joined my first year writing students in an exploration of these sentence stems:

  1. I am from…
  2. Home means…
  3. Home defines me or my values by…
  4. My heritage is…
  5. My heritage impacts my identity and my values because…
  6. Where I live impacts my identity and values by…
  7. I hope/wish my community…
  8. The community I choose is…
  9. The anthem of my people is …
  10. The symbol that best represents me is …

We also considered the importance of roots and place, drawing inspiration from Wolfpen Creek by James Still. Then concluded by writing about the value that we most want others to associate with us and where that value comes from, what it looks like in our lives, and why it is important. I know I filled pages in my journal writing with both my students and the Just Write group so I am sure that you can as well.
